Matheus is a mycologist and PhD student co-supervised by Zuzana Kolaříková from the Institute of Botany and Petr Kohout from the Institute of Microbiology. His PhD project focuses on morphological and functional traits of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and how these traits affect distribution and ecosystem role of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal species. Matheus is focusing on various aspects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal ecology since his undergraduate studies. He did his bachelor and master projects under supervisions of Sidney Luiz Stürmer and Teotonio Soares de Carvalho, respectively, in Federal University of Lavras in Brazil.
